[origin: EP0841449A1] The long bolt mechanism consists of a housing (1) fitted into a recess in the door or window frame and containing a rotary toothed plate (14) which can be turned through 90 degrees by a handle and a bar (15) with two studs (8) connected to the bolts and a rack (16) meshing with the teeth (17) of the plate (14). The greatest diameter of the toothed plate (14) is more or less equivalent to the width of the mechanism's housing, which has an aperture (18) in one side wall to receive the edge of the plate. The mechanism also has a spring-loaded vane (21) which lies parallel to the direction of the rack's travel and is aligned between the plate's centre of rotation and the points where it meshes with the rack.
