Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19527630A1] The betaine compounds described correspond to formula (1) in which RCO is an aliphatic acyl group with 6 to 22 carbon atoms, Z is a straight-chain polyhydroxyhydrocarbon group with at least three optionally oxalkylated hydroxyl groups, m is a whole number from 1 to 4, n is a whole number from 1 to 4, R<1> is C1 to C4 alkyl or C2 to C4 hydroxyalkyl and R<2> is C1 to C4 alkyl or C2 to C4 hydroxyalkyl. The betaine compounds, and aqueous, alcoholic or aqueous-alcoholic solutions and dispersions of them, are prepared by betainization of the corresponding tertiary-amine compound with a halo acid or a halo acid salt. These betaine compounds and their solutions are suitable in particular for the production of surface-active agents for hair and body care.
