Abstract (en)
[origin: WO9707298A1] A substantially clog-free skimmer (2, 40, 80) is described for location in a body of contaminated water, the skimmer is provided as the inlet for an oil/water separator which separator does not form part of the present invention. The skimmer (2, 40, 80) is designed to prevent the ingress of large sized rubbish or to substantially orientate relatively smaller sized rubbish such as leaves and the like so that the filtering system (61) of the skimmer (2, 40, 80) is not clogged during operation of the skimmer. The inlet of the skimmer has curved walls which orient the relatively smaller sized rubbish into an orientation which has the effect of not clogging the filter when the rubbish is collected in the filter. The correct orientation of the rubbish is achieved by having substantially curved walls associated with the inlet means or inlet ports. The skimmer may take a variety of forms and be fixedly attached to or at the base of the body of water or it may be free to float and be self-levelling by being provided with adjustable buoyancy tanks. If the skimmer is designed to be fixedly located at or towards the base of the body of water it is provided with a flexible membrane to allow the top portion of the skimmer to be self-levelling. The advantage of the skimmer is that it is substantially clog-free.
