Abstract (en)

In an electrode consisting of a paste of electrochemically active material particles and a conductive support of three-dimensional porous material having passages which connect the filaments delimiting contiguous pores, the mean passage width (L, in mu m) is related to the mean particle diameter (D, in mu m) by a mathematical relationship: (W x D) + X = ≥ L = ≥ (Y x D) + Z, (where W = 0.16, Y = 1.69, X = 202.4 mu and Z = 80 mu m). Also claimed is a process for making the above electrode by (a) producing a magnified image of a flat surface within a three-dimensional porous material to show the filaments, pores and passages; (b) measuring the passage widths and calculating the mean width (L); and (c) selecting the material such that the above relationship is true. Also claimed are (i) a data collection system, comprising an optical system associated with a computer, for carrying out the above process; and (ii) a method of characterising the above electrode, in which the paste filling ratio (R) of the material is calculated by introducing a volume (U) of the paste into the material of pore volume (V) and calculating the filling ratio (R, in %) defined by R = (U divided by V) x 100.

La présente invention a pour objet une électrode comprenant une pâte contenant des particules de matière électrochimiquement active et un support conducteur constitué d'un matériau poreux tridimensionnel comprenant des brins délimitant des pores contigus communiquant par des passages. La largeur moyenne L en µm desdits passages est liée au diamètre moyen Ø en µm desdites particules par la relation, où W et Y sont des coefficients sans unité: (W x Ø) + X >= L >= (Y x Ø) + Z dans laquelle W = 0,16 Y = 1,69 X = 202,4µm et Z = 80µm
