[origin: US6053979A] An apparatus for direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty coating medium onto a traveling material web, notably of paper or cardboard, includes at least one oblong working unit wetted by the coating medium and an oblong support element carrying the working unit. The at least one working unit and the support element are thermally shielded from one another. The at least one working unit and the support element are joined to one another by way of an elongation compensation system.
