[origin: WO9709233A1] A hydraulic cylinder (10) for steering a tiltable boat engine (23) includes a cylinder housing (11) with first and second housing ends (67, 69). The cylinder (10) is characterized in that at least the first end (67) includes a reduced-dimension relief portion (71) preventing the cylinder first end (67) from contacting the engine (23) when the engine (23) is tilted. A new method for making such a cylinder (10) includes the steps of forming a cylinder housing (11) having a mid-section (65) and first and second housing ends (67, 69) and shaping a relief portion (71) at the first end (67). The cylinder first end (67) is thereby prevented from contacting the engine (23) (and, particularly, the engine stern bracket (73)) when the engine (23) is tilted. The invention also involves unique manufacturing and assembly techniques.
