[origin: EP0847922A1] The strapping material (14), particularly a thermoplastic tape, is supplied from a store to a strapping machine which wraps it round a package. The machine has a drum in two segments (29,30) with a gap (22) between the segments through which the tape passes. The tape is tensioned around the package (13) and sealed by a sealing unit (15). At least one of the segments (30) can be moved relative to the other (29) to narrow the gap, forming a clamp for the tape at the end of its movement. Preferably, the movable drum segment can be moved into the clamping position solely by the tension force of the strapping tape passing around the drum and moves against spring force.
