[origin: EP0847925A1] In the method when a pack type has to be changed, or at the end of a shift, a packing machine for cigarettes is run at reduced operating speed and a last group of cigarettes (11), forming the contents of a pack, are identified so that the units forming the packing machine, including a folding carousel (18) for paper and foil, a cigarette magazine (13), together with conveyors etc., are switched off progressively as they have performed their operation on the last pack and it has moved to the next operation. Preferably, cigarette groups are transferred from the magazine in pockets (15) of a chain conveyor (16) and the last filled pocket controls the stoppage of the downstream units.
