[origin: EP0847926A1] The appliance consists of rotating cutter (15) which separates the product carrier (1) in the region of a linking seal (4) between two sachets embossed with a with a grid pattern (19) across the longitudinal direction of movement of the product carrier. To identify and locate the linking seals an optical reflection sensor (6) is positioned above and/or below the product carrier. The sensor generates an AC signal which corresponds to the grid pattern when the linking seal is in the region of the sensor. The number of cycles provides a measure of the width b of the linking seal. A processor evaluates the AC signal to control the peripheral speed of the rotary cutter to ensure that the separating cut takes place in the middle of the linking seal.
