[origin: EP0849179A1] The material roll is protected by a wrapping applied in a spiral pattern using a relatively narrow wrapping material. The wrapping material is taken from a supply reel (4) which has a servo drive (17) to minimise the tension in the wrapping material and thereby reduce the risk of tearing the wrap. The wrapping material is taken from the supply reel by a driven dispenser head which passes the material under an adhesive spray head before wrapping it around the roll. The feed speed of the wrapping material is matched to the surface speed of the roll.
