[origin: EP0849181A1] The material roll is wrapped using a standard width wrapping material wound round the roll in a spiral pattern. During wrapping the axial position of the roll is monitored. If the roll moves axially then the wrapping feed is adjusted accordingly to maintain a constant pitch and an even wrapping pattern. The axial position sensor is an out of contact type eg. ultrasonic sensor, proximity sensor. The wrapping is wound over the ends of the roll to provide spare wrapping which is folded down over the end faces of the roll. Both the wrapping feed and the end folding controls use the axial position signals to accurately operate on the roll.
