[origin: EP0849467A1] The electric starter motor is fitted with a current monitoring circuit which monitors the periodic variations in current due to the compression and decompression parts of the engine cycle. When the engine fires and starts to provide torque, the pattern of current variations changes. The control system then switches off the starter current. The control circuit has a modular design with three connections which can be clipped into the conventional starter motor circuit.
