[origin: EP0851092A1] A drilling tool has a bit fitted with damping elements (28), at least some of which consist of elastomeric material and each of which consists of a stud projecting from a recess (36) in the tool surface. Each stud is capable of deforming to absorb tool vibrations. The projecting portion of each stud (28) may be covered with an abrasion protective coating, e.g. of tungsten carbide or diamond-containing material, which may itself be covered with a dome of PDC.
