[origin: EP0852973A1] The method involves pressing a metal blank to form a rough shape (10) with a base (11) and a peripheral skirt (12). As second stage involves forming the peripheral skirt into a sidewall with a shaped section (5) in a shaping operation including a shortening and an extending mode. The third stage involves forming the skirt of the rough shape to obtain the sidewall of the can. The peripheral skirt of the rough shape can have a constant section over at least part of its height. The peripheral skirt can have a flared section.
