[origin: EP0853991A1] The roller head has rollers (10) distributed in a holder at angle and axial distances about a roller axis and coupled with a gear drive. The roller surfaces have a spiral rising course running against their rotary direction. A locking device automatically locks after each full roller rotation and is released before each roller process. When a workpiece is inserted between the rollers, a stop engages the workpiece and releases the locking device. After the release of the locking device a drive rotates the rollers to position them on the workpiece. After location, the drive further rotates through friction with the rollers. The roller head is arranged opposite an axially fixed bearing component (70) on the opposite side of the rollers' rolling direction and is axially displaceably supported against a tension spring (72). A release gear arrangement (94,102) in the roller head is arranged between the bearing component and the locking device. The release gear arrangement first releases the locking device when the roller head is moved at a control stroke on the bearing component through the workpiece that is pushed against the stop.
