[origin: US6156158A] In a method and apparatus for damping contact oscillations of rotating rolls in a paper machine, but notably in a coater, the rolls being held endways in bearings and at least two rolls forming with each other a nip, the damping is carried out actively, the active stimulation (phase-shifted counteroscillation) acting from outside directly and/or indirectly on at least one bearing point of one of the rolls.
