[origin: GB2306483A] A novel polynucleotide encoding a novel S. aureus cell surface polypeptide having the LPXTG motif were obtained by sequencing a library of clones from S. aureus WCUH29 in E. coli. The polypeptide or antibodies to said polypeptide may be used as anti-bacterial agents to block adhesion of S. aureus to indwelling devices or to wounds. Alternatively, the polypeptides or polynucleotides may be used as vaccines or in diagnostic assays.
