[origin: EP0860755A1] The system for illuminating the dial (4) of a watch fits within the casing (1) which includes a cover glass (8) lying over the dial and held in place by a cover ring (9). At least one light source (13) is mounted at the periphery of the dial with a light guide (20) extending around the circumference of the dial. The light guide has an internal surface which is polished, and an external surface held within the space defined by the dial (4), the cover glass (8) and the internal wall of the cover ring (9). The outside surface of the light guide has a progressively increasing degree of surface roughness, causing an increasing degree of scattering as the distance from the light source(s) increases.
