[origin: WO9718388A1] This invention is directed to an air-charging system for a four-cycle internal combustion engine (54, 66, 74, 90) wherein an exhaust gas-driven turbocharger (56, 156, 76, 96, 196) is connected to the exhaust and inlet air of the engine (54, 66, 74, 90). An electric motor-driven compressor (62, 68, 84, 114) has its outlet connected either to the inlet or outlet of the air compressor section of the turbocharger (56, 156, 76, 96, 196) to increase the amount of air in the parallel connection or increase the pressure inthe series connection. The use of an electric motor-driven compressor (62, 68, 84, 114) increases engine acceleration and decreases engine back pressure and unburned fuel.
