[origin: EP0864381A2] The apparatus (1) for braking and transfer of rolled material of varied length onto a cooling bed (8) or a collector has a carrier frame (2) with at least one braking surface (4) oriented in the direction of motion of the rolled material. Several elements (6) with at least an angle section at the bottom are pivotable back and forth against the braking surface. During braking of the rolled material, these elements jointly with the braking surface (4) form a space which is bounded laterally and from below. As the elements (6) pivot away from the braking surface, the rolled material is released. Also claimed is a process carried out using the apparatus above, where the elements (6) are pivoted against the braking surface (4) through angles which successively increase from the entry point of the rolled material.
