[origin: EP0864709A2] The free-standing stairs have supporting posts (10) at the start and end of the stairs, and at any direction change points in the flight of stairs. The supporting posts in the start and end regions of the stairs have metal supports (20) running along their load-supporting length, with a wood mantle over the whole length of the supports. At the top of the stairs, the pillars are bonded to the landing and, at the bottom of the stairs, they are bonded to the floor. The metal supports (20) can be adjusted in length.
