[origin: EP0865011A1] The portable radio message receiver comprises a receiving aerial and circuit (4,5) for messages transmitted in coded format, and a central processing unit (6) for processing these messages and decoding them. A control memory (14) contains at least one number called the validity data, representing a certain sum of money. The central processing unit is arranged to progressively decrement the validity data as a function of the use of the device. This ultimately prevents further use of the message receiver when the validity data has fallen below a predetermined level. A further system may be provided for re-charging the validity data in memory, in order to give the unit a further period of operation after conclusion of the first charged period.
