[origin: EP0870679A1] A reel of thermoplastic strap (55)is rotatably mounted onto the side of the device and a feeds into the device through a pair of motor driven rollers (16) to a store area (17). A second pair of reversible friction rollers (18) drive the strap into the strap guide channel (12) via a high tension tightening drum (19) followed by a strap clamp (20) and guide channel (21) to the closing unit (15). When the package is wrapped tautly via the reversible friction rollers, the end sections are overlapped and friction welded. Friction welding is achieved where clamps either side of the overlapping region press one strap section against a counter-support and an oscillator vibrates one strap end portion against the other at high frequency, causing a friction weld.
