Abstract (en)

Fuel injection valves for injecting fuel directly into a combustion chamber are subjected to high thermal stresses because of the heat generated in the combustion chamber on the one side and the cooling effect of air passing through intake passages in the cylinder head. This may also adversely affect the operation of the injection valve. In order to provide a more even distribution of temperature at the injection valve, a cooling structure for a fuel injection valve is proposed. The cooling structure comprises a cooling jacket (64) formed in the cylinder head (7) in the vicinity of the fuel injection valve (26) and is arranged such as to cool the injection valve in addition to the cooling effect provided by the intake air. Moreover, an internal combustion engine having the afore-mentioned cooling structure is disclosed. <IMAGE>
