[origin: WO9816457A1] The invention concerns a winding-up machine and a method of winding up a continuously arriving thread to form a spool. To that end, the thread (2) is guided in a reciprocating manner along a curved guide edge (8) by means of a flyer-traversing arrangement by flyers (6, 7) driven in opposite directions transversely to the thread direction. Owing to the shape of the guide edge (8), the position of the thread on the guiding flyer in each case is determined such that the thread is displaced on the spool at a predetermined traversing speed. According to the invention, the shape of the guide edge (8) can be varied during the winding-up process so that the traversing speed is decreased or increased.
