[origin: DE19717068C1] In thrust operation always at least one valve type, all gas inlet (2) or all gas outlet valves (3), are permanently closed. The other valve type, either the gas inlet or the gas outlet valves, in the area of a top dead centre of a piston movement remains open and in the area of a bottom dead centre is closed again, whilst the other gas exchange valves remain closed. One valve type in the area of the top dead centre and in the area of the bottom dead centre of the piston movement is shortly opened and then immediately closed. In thrust operation with one or more cylinders (8) all gas exchange valves are closed. The engine brake torque is regulated dependent upon a brake signal (9).
