Abstract (en)
[origin: EP0874139A2] The gas-changing valve (2) of the engine is actuated by a camshaft (4) via a cam (3) having two or more working surfaces (15-17) giving different amounts of lift. A cup-type tappet (1) between cam and valve has two or more transmission components, one working with the valve stem (11) and the other with a spring (7) acting in the direction of the camshaft. These two components are coupled together by a sliding component (44) in a first position, and move independently of each other in a second. The component has a locking surface working with a locking component guided in the tappet and working with the camshaft, so that in one position the component is locked in place, while being movable into the other position. The spring acts against the locking component in the tappet. The latter component can work against an unlocking surface on the camshaft so that the component is released in a second position.
