Abstract (en)
[origin: WO9726101A1] In a charge well (C) for adding scrap metal pieces or particles to a molten metal bath, a stationary diverter (20) is provided in the charge well (C) for diverting the circular flow of molten metal, caused by orientation of the inlet port (14), in a downward direction, thereby creating a downward flow of molten metal which results in quick and efficient submergence of incoming lightweight scrap metal pieces or particles. Preferably, the diverter (20) includes a leading edge (22) which extends in a generally radial direction within the charge well (C) and a flat top (24) which tapers from the leading edge (22) to a point or narrowed trailing edge. A downward curver surface (28) extends from the leading edge (22) to facilitate the downward flow of molten metal.
