[origin: DE19718028C1] A filter assembly has a housing (10) with connections (12, 14, 16) for feed-flow, permeate and retentate. The assembly has a number of membrane modules (20) arranged in parallel, one or more of which can be connected to a back-flush assembly for cleaning while the other filter modules continue with filtration. The novelty is that: (a) the filter modules (20) are located in a common filter chamber (18); (b) the back-flush assembly (22) has a drive unit (42) which presents the back-flush flow outlet in turn to the respective filter module inlet (44), while simultaneously feeding the other membrane modules for normal operation; and (c) the permeate outlet has a variable throttle-valve.
