[origin: DE19602118A1] The object of the invention is to prevent movable contacts (4) from being welded to fixed contacts (5) of a switching device (1). This object is achieved by an auxiliary magnet system (22, 23, 24) which is arranged in the main conducting path and generates a contact pressure force corresponding to the exciting current such that, when excess and short-circuit currents occur, there is no arcing between the contacts (4, 5). To that end, the movable iron core (24) of the auxiliary magnet system is connected to the contact bridge carrier (10, 11) which connects and disconnects the contacts (4, 5).
