Abstract (en)

[origin: GB2301984A] An ATM network switch has a buffer 24 for buffering the flow of ATM cells and a congestion control mechanism 23. The congestion control mechanism has: i) means for establishing a value Max, representing the maximum permissible number of ATM cells on the connection for the cell which may be stored in the buffer, and an offset value K, which determines the maximum occupancy of the buffer for the connection; ii) means for determining the total number of cells TSC currently stored in the buffer and the number of cells VcCnt stored for a given connection; iii) means for determining the remaining capacity BS of the buffer; iv) calculating means for calculating an adjusted value of Max in accordance with the formula: , and v) means for comparing the adjusted value with VcCnt and for discarding the cell if VcCnt is greater than the adjusted value. The congestion control may also be applied to a Explicit Forward Congestion Indication (EFCI) system.
