[origin: EP0878251A1] The transfer press (1) includes at least one press station (2) with a press table (16) which can be moved out of this station, and serves for seating at least one change-able tool (6, 11). It further includes a transfer unit (27) which serves for supply and removal of sheet metal workpieces, and incorporates a changeable holding element (31) which is located before and/or after the tool (6, 11) when the latter is closed. There is at least one seating (33) for the holding element (31) on the press table (16) and/or the tool (6, 11). During tool changes the holding element is held in a changing position with an orientation which differs from the orientation of this element in its operating position. The method for operating the press is characterised by the fact that in the changing position the holding element is held besides the tool (6, 11) in an appropriate seating (33) and that the press table with the tool and the holding element can be taken out of the press.
