Abstract (en)

Steel for making large moulds comprises by weight: 1-3% manganese, up to 0.400% silicon, up to 0.015% phosphorous, 1.50-3.5% chromium, 0.25-1% molybdenum, 0.100-0.250% niobium, 100-300 ppm titanium or zirconium if necessary, up to 0.300% copper, up to 0.300% nickel, up to 80ppm nitrogen, up to 80 ppm oxygen, up to 30 ppm calcium, 15-50 ppm boron, 0.10-0.25% carbon, up to 0.0250% sulphur and up to 250 ppm aluminium, the balance being iron and impurities. Also claimed is making this steel by melting in an electric furnace, then degassing under a vacuum below 1, preferably 0.2 torr, in a heated ladle.
