[origin: DE19611102A1] The invention concerns a gas generator comprising: a combustion chamber part (12) which contains a gas-generating material (18); and a dust separator (13) for separating solids present in the gas flow generated. According to the invention, in order to prevent the air bag from inflating too suddenly and thereby injuring vehicle occupants, the combustion chamber part (12) is divided into at least two combustion chambers (16, 17) which operationally are independent of each other, each comprising its own ignition element (19, 20). The ignition elements (19, 20) are controlled successively in a chronologically staggered manner in order to lengthen the gas-generation time interval.
