Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0884708A2] The method involves using mobile detection devices or "floating cars" to detect the current traffic and pass the data to a central station via a set or variable messaging method. The central station determines a description of the current traffic situation in the traffic network from the incoming messages. The description takes the form of traffic phases covering the network and representing states in the edges or nodes of the network. The central station predicts the traffic situation at a future time by computing at least the movements and future positions of the traffic phases in the network.
