[origin: WO9733639A1] An apparatus with a housing (1) containing a first, stationary lower plate electrode (9) and a second, movable upper plate electrode (10), wherein both plate electrodes are electrically conductive, mutually insulated and electrically connected to respective terminals of a battery (7). The second plate electrode (10) is freely movable, spaced apart from the first plate electrode (9) and provided with an opening (17). A syringe needle (16) to be destroyed may be inserted into the opening (17) such that it contacts both plate electrodes (9, 10) and an electric current flows through the needle to melt and thus destroy said needle. The molten metal resulting from the destruction of the needle (16) falls into a collecting compartment (18). An electric current control circuit inhibits operation when the electrodes are dirty. A reliable apparatus guaranteeing the destruction of the needle (16) to provide effective decontamination is thus achieved.
