The chains extend in the chain conveyors and have gripping means for grasping the material web edges. The free wings or webs of the pivotable chain conveyors are mounted to be movable on a horizontal support by carrier wheels. At least one carrier wheel is in the form of a driven friction wheel, and a drive motor is directly associated with the carrier wheel.
