[origin: WO9734052A1] The present invention provides a bearing system, particularly suited to bridges and other civil engineering applications, which more readily stands hostile environments over extended periods. The bearing system includes one or more contact surfaces (34) in which the contact surface is formed from a fiber reinforced material. The use of fabric reinforced thermosetting resins is preferred. The contact surface (34) may additionally be provided with a series of recesses (50) filled with lubricating material.
