To fold a stack a fabric for stitching, downstream of a sewing machine and at a gap from it, part of the material is fed and clamped in a vertical clamping unit in the intermediate zone between them. The fabric is drawn downwards by a defined length. The remainder of the fabric is gripped by the transfer system, to be folded for the fold to be fed through a carrier gap in the transport mechanism which draws it through with the fold at the front, which also pulls up the suspended fabric length from the clamp, which is opened to allow the folded fabric to be formed into a stack. An apparatus, with a vertical clamping unit (52) in the intermediate zone, is also claimed. It grips and clamps a part of the fabric (4), to move it vertically (48) by a given length. The remainder of the fabric is moved onwards through a laying surface (28) of the stacking station (19) and the carrier gap formed by the transport mechanism (24) which is moved up and down (23).

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung zum Falten und Stapeln von Nähgut, welche stromabwärts einer Nähmaschine und von dieser durch einen Zwischenraum getrennt angeordnet ist, wobei eine diesen Zwischenraum überbrückende Übergabeeinrichtung und nachfolgende Transporteinrichtung vorhanden sind, durch welche das Nähgut der Nähmaschine entnommen und der Stapeleinrichtung zugeführt wird. Dabei ist im Zwischenraum eine vertikale Klemmeinrichtung vorgesehen, durch welche ein Teil des Nähgutes klemmend erfaßt und um einen definierten Betrag in vertikaler Richtung transportiert wird, wobei nachfolgend der übrige Teil des Nähgutes in einem durch eine Auflagefläche der Stapeleinrichtung und die bezüglich dieser heb- und senkbaren Transporteinrichtung gebildeten Transportspalt transportiert wird. Das Nähgut wird dabei gefaltet und kann lagenrichtig mittels der Stapeleinrichtung abgelegt werden. <IMAGE>
