[origin: EP0889208A1] The warning device monitors the oil level in the oil sump (12), with a mean oil level determined from a series of varying oil level values, to provide a warning signal for the driver when the oil level drops below a minimum value. The mean oil level is provided by an evaluation device (20), coupled to the driver warning display (30) and to a switch (40), responding to the opening of the bonnet for topping up the oil level, for cancelling the oil level warning signal.
