[origin: EP0889217A2] The control has an electronic engine control, an accelerator pedal position sensor and an electronic throttle, for allowing operation of the engine in a stoichiometric combustion mode, or a lean-running combustion mode, by regulating the quantity of air supplied to the engine. The electronic engine control has a decision stage, providing a signal indicating the engine combustion mode, for selecting between alternate air quantity characteristics (40, 64), addressed by the engine load, for providing the corresponding combustion air quantity, for addressing a further characteristic (50), to provide a setting value for control of the throttle actuator.
