Abstract (en)
The device has a close-coiled spring (33), one end of which wraps around a fixed valve guide (30), and the other end around a sleeve (31) which can rotate about a valve axis (A). The sleeve has internal inclined splines (310), which engage with external splines (320) of a valve spring retainer (32). As the retainer moves axially within the sleeve, the splines cause relative rotation of the sleeve and retainer. The spring is arranged so that as the valve opens, the relative rotation tends to unwind the spring, reducing its friction grip on the sleeve and guide, and allowing the sleeve to rotate relative to the guide, so the valve opens without rotating. As the valve closes, the relative rotation is in the opposite sense and the spring tightens, preventing relative rotation of the sleeve and retainer, and thus causes rotation of the retainer and valve. The retainer assembly has a rolling element thrust bearing (36) to facilitate rotation of the valve relative to the valve spring.
