[origin: EP0893572A1] A preform element, such as a preform cutting element for a rotary drag-type drill bit, includes a facing table (10) of polycrystalline diamond having a front face (15), a peripheral surface, and a rear surface (11) bonded to the front surface of a tungsten carbide substrate (12). The front surface of the substrate is formed with a plurality of recesses (13, 17) into which extend corresponding projections (18, 19) formed on the rear surface of the facing table. The recesses include at least one rebate (13) which extends around only a part of the periphery of the substrate (12) and into which extends a projection (18) on the facing table which provides a part of the peripheral surface of the facing table (10). <IMAGE>
