[origin: WO9740087A1] A process is disclosed for preparing water-soluble, carboxyalkylated, amino group-containing polymers by reacting water-soluble, amino group-containing polymers with at least one aldehyde and one alkaline cyanide or with a cyanhydrin from an aldehyde and an alkaline cyanide in an aqueous solution at temperatures from 60 to 110 DEG C. Also disclosed is the use of the carboxyalkylated polymers which contain amino groups and of the N-oxides derived therefrom as auxiliary agents for the production of paper, as additives of washing and cleaning agents and as complexing agents during wood pulp bleaching, cellulose bleaching, cellulose production and de-inking of used printed paper.
