[origin: DE19716274A1] The cylinders in the first bank (R1) are offset in the lengthwise direction of the engine in relation to those in the second bank (R2). Third and fourth banks (R3,R4) are mounted in a V-pattern, the third being in the gap between the first and second ones and the fourth outside the gap. All the banks are coupled to the one crankshaft (4). The third and fourth banks can be offset, as can the third and first and the fourth and second. The angles between the first and second banks and the third and fourth ones can be the same, and the angle between the V-shaped gaps so formed can be such that the banks form mirror-images on opposite sides of a central plane (ME) through the crankshaft.
