[origin: EP0895728A1] A bicycle shoe (10) is disclosed for use with a clipless pedal (14). The bicycle shoe (10) has an upper peripheral portion (16) with a sole portion (18) coupled thereto and an inner sole portion or cushion (20) overlying the inner surface (30) of the sole portion (18). The bicycle shoe (10) can either be designed for use with a road bicycle or a mountain bicycle. In other words, the sole portion (18) can be either a substantially hard, rigid member or a substantially flexible, resilient member. In either case, the sole (18) is provided with one or more attachment apertures (40, 42) for attaching a low profile cleat (12) thereto. In particular, the attachment apertures (40, 42) are longitudinally arranged such that the fasteners (56) which couple the cleat (12) to the shoe sole portion (18) are located in front of and behind the pedal shaft (23). Preferably, the attachment apertures (40, 42) are spaced from a centre line extending between the centre points of the toe portion (34) and the heel portion (36) of the sole (18). In one embodiment, a pair of elongated slots (40, 42) which are axially aligned are used to attach a low profile cleat (12). In another embodiment, a single elongated slot (42c) is utilised to couple the low profile cleat (52) to the bottom outer surface of the sole portion (18c). The sole portion (18) of the bicycle shoe (10) can also be provided with one or more additional slots for coupling other standard cleats which are known in the prior art. <IMAGE>
