[origin: EP0895860A2] Optical sensors (7a, 7b) are positioned before the first printing unit (1) of the printing machine and output a signal dependent on the shadowing of the web (3). Their optical axis (a) is tilted in relation to the plane of transport of the web in the perpendicular direction of the deflection force which can be produced by a deflection device (8), e.g. blast nozzles. The detection system is preferably positioned near the roll changer (4).
