Also claimed is a control operation where the profile is measured of at least one web characteristic, and the measurement signals are processed in a computer for the calculation of the correction required to bring this characteristic into nominal values. The correction value is applied to at least one adjustment unit to alter the web characteristic in a section of the web, and the settings of other adjustment units are monitored which have an influence on this web characteristic in other web sections, and the corrections are computed for the necessary alterations to modify their actions on other web sections across the web width, for this web characteristic, and their settings are changed accordingly.
