Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0908530A1] A saw or knife stock blade consists of carbonitrided steel having a maximum carbon penetration depth of 20 microns and a maximum nitrogen penetration depth of 400 microns. An Independent claim is also included for producing the above blade by simultaneously diffusing nitrogen and carbon into a steel at up to 600 degrees C. Preferred Features: The steel is a martensitic hardenable steel which is carbonitrided to obtain a surface hardness of e.g. 54-68 HRC (600-940 HV 1), a core hardness of 32-50 HRC (315-530 HV 1) and a hardness gradient, in the nitrogen diffusion region, of 0.15-0.25 HRC/ mu for saw blades or 0.3-0.4 HRC/ mu for knife blades.
