[origin: EP0909591A2] The mail sorting device has the individual items transported past light barriers (E) and sorting deflectors (F), each item contained within a transparent envelope which projects beyond it on either side, with initial detection of the outer edges of the envelope and the outer edges of the enclosed contents. The measured signals are used in combination with the transport rate, for determining the spacing of the outer edges of the envelope from the outer edges of the contents and used for controlling the sorting deflectors for maximum deflection.
